Who this guide is for
For university students, multilingual writers, and researchers revising English essays where clarity, disciplinary conventions, and accurate attribution matter.
Start with the argument, not the vocabulary
Before revising sentences, identify the essay’s question, your answer, and the purpose of each paragraph. A paragraph that summarizes three readings but never connects them to the thesis needs reasoning, not more natural synonyms. Mark the claim, evidence, and interpretation; then check whether the interpretation actually follows from the evidence.
Replace empty framing such as “It is important to note that” with the point itself. Keep necessary technical terms, even when repetition feels less elegant. Switching between “validity,” “reliability,” and “accuracy” for variety can change an argument rather than improve it. When a sentence is difficult, decide whether it needs a clearer subject, a defined concept, or two separate steps. Do not simplify away an important qualification.
Make academic English natural without making it casual
Natural academic English uses precise verbs, manageable sentences, and transitions that express actual relationships. Replace “Furthermore” only after deciding whether the next sentence adds evidence, introduces a contrast, or explains a consequence. Avoid decorating every paragraph with a connector.
For multilingual writers, review articles, prepositions, and noun combinations in context: “evidence for the claim” is usually more idiomatic than “evidence to the claim.” Do not mistake an unfamiliar but correct construction for an error. Follow the spelling variety your course requires, and keep it consistent. First person may be appropriate in reflective or methodological writing, but disciplinary expectations differ. Preserve useful uncertainty: “suggests” should not become “proves” merely because the stronger verb sounds more confident.
Use Humanizely as a bounded revision step
Choose a passage with a clear purpose and request restrained academic editing. Specify what must stay unchanged: quotations, citations, terminology, dates, numbers, and the strength of claims. Humanizely’s free allowance is 500 words per request; for longer essays, revise coherent passages and then check the whole essay for consistency.
Compare each suggestion with your draft. Check cited sources directly, including page references and whether a source supports the revised wording. Sentence restructuring can accidentally attach a citation to a claim it never supported. Keep drafts and a record of assistance. Before using any AI editing, consult your institution’s and instructor’s rules; disclose assistance when required. If the rules prohibit it, do not use Humanizely for that assignment.
